Biotin for Hair and Nails: What Thirty Years of Evidence Actually Shows

Biotin is the best-selling beauty vitamin in America. The evidence behind it is older, smaller and narrower than the shelf space suggests.

Why biotin became the beauty vitamin

Biotin, vitamin B7, earned its reputation honestly at first. When people lack it, through a rare inherited enzyme defect, long-term raw egg white consumption or certain anti-seizure drugs, their hair thins and falls, their nails break and a red scaly rash appears around the face. Give them biotin and those signs reverse.[1] From there it was a short marketing step to "biotin grows hair", and the step was never backed by trials in people who were not deficient.

A label built around biotin

What the reviews of the literature found

In 2017 a team at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia searched the literature for every report of biotin used for hair or nail problems. They found eighteen cases. Every one involved an underlying condition: inherited biotin-processing disorders, uncombable hair syndrome in children, or brittle nail syndrome. In those people biotin helped. No randomized trial supported biotin for hair loss in healthy people.[2] A second group compared the clinical data with biotin's popularity on social media and concluded the two had little to do with each other.[3]

One study did find something useful for buyers. Measuring serum biotin in women complaining of hair loss, a Swiss dermatologist found low levels in a share of them.[4] That supports testing, or at least considering diet, rather than assuming.

Nails: the one place with a signal

Two small studies in the early 1990s gave people with brittle nails 2.5 mg (2,500 mcg) of biotin a day for several months. One used electron microscopy and reported thicker nail plates; the other reported that a majority of participants saw firmer nails.[5][6] Neither had a placebo group, and both were small. Still, brittle nails remain the most reasonable reason to try biotin, and it is the dose those studies used that later products, often at 5,000 or 10,000 mcg, are loosely based on.

Does a bigger dose help more?

There is no evidence that it does. Biotin's enzymes are saturated at normal intakes, and the adequate intake for adults is only 30 mcg a day. High doses are not known to be toxic, which is why no upper limit exists, but the surplus does have one real consequence: it circulates in the blood and can distort laboratory tests that use biotin chemistry.[1][7]

The bottom line

  • Brittle nails: a reasonable, low-risk trial, judged over three months at the nail base.
  • Hair loss: test for the common causes first; biotin helps only if biotin was low.
  • Any dose: tell your clinician and the lab before blood tests.

Gelagen contains 5,000 mcg of biotin per two-gummy serving, alongside other vitamins. Our ingredient file puts every line in context.

Quick questions on this topic

Can biotin regrow hair?

Only when hair loss is caused by a lack of biotin or by a specific inherited disorder. In healthy people with normal biotin levels, no trial has shown regrowth.

How much biotin was used for brittle nails?

The two small studies from the early 1990s used 2,500 mcg a day for several months. Gelagen's two-gummy serving supplies 5,000 mcg.

Is high-dose biotin dangerous?

No toxicity is documented and no upper limit exists. The practical risk is false laboratory results, so tell your clinician and the lab before blood tests.
